Kicking off a brand new school year, Short Avenue is hosting three fabulous food trucks + a live concert featuring the Del Rey Community Jazz Band on Wednesday, August 16 starting at 5pm on the front lawn.
Truck line up offers returning favorite The Greasy Weiner (offering award-winning hand-made hotdogs made from locally source ingredients, sausage, burgers and specialty fries), and newcomers, soon-to-be favorites, Mandoline Grill (offering fresh, crisp vegan and carnivore-friendly bánh mì sandwiches, and mother’s famous bún thịt nướng noodle bowls) and Churro Stix, tantalizing you with gourmet churros. Churro Stix is revolutionizing the art of churro-making and will be the next go-to dessert place.
Relax with new and old friends, let the children play, and enjoy a tasty picnic style meal with savory and sweet treats on a warm August evening. That’s Short Avenue’s Food Truck Fiesta, the third Wednesday of the month during day light savings times.
Reading just 15 minutes a day could earn $10,000 for our Library! Won’t you help us out?
Libraries throughout Los Angeles have summer reading programs where kids (and adults) can earn prizes. LAUSD is offering a summer reading challenge which fits hand-in-hand with the libraries’ reading programs. It is win-win all around!
If your family is up for the challenge of reading just 15 minutes a day, or 100 minutes a week, you can nominate OUR SCHOOL to WIN $10,000 for the library. Each student’s log submitted = one nomination. If you have two children reading, that counts as two nominations. The more students who read, the more nominations we can get for Short Avenue and win! Remember to track your time on a reading log.

If you have any questions, please ask Ms. Casilli, our awesome librarian, who is organizing our Short Avenue Reading efforts. Happy Reading (and logging)!
This week a dedicated group of enthusiastic volunteers converged in a quiet classroom at Short Avenue Elementary to begin the work of creating a unique transitional kindergarten (TK) learning oasis. Amidst drilling, painting, building, sanding, sewing, sawing, hammering, repainting, staging, organizing, designing, hanging, cleaning, styling and perfecting the details, emerged a warm, inviting, creative play and work space for the littlest students.
Thoughtfully hand-selected educational resources were carefully integrated into this enchanting environment, creating pockets of experiential learning and discovery from a kinetic magnet ball run wall, to the eco-friendly meditative painting station and zen garden to the Montessori sandpaper letters and squishy sand. The charm of the room is captured in delightful details like a row of perfectly spaced beautiful cobalt blue glass bottles atop a cabinet with swag of playful elephant pennants.
We are showcasing the new culture of TK at Short Avenue on Friday, June 23 from 9-11am for incoming TK children and families. Stop by and let us know your favorite part. See what the buzz is all about.
Many thanks to the Pedagogical Institute, a non-profit organization supporting children by mentoring teachers, who selected Short Avenue to receive this momentous award.
Get ready for a fabulous and fun Kinder Roundup Saturday, June 3 from 10am til noon. 2017-2018 enrolling kindergartners and their families are invited to experience a delightful kindergarten day, see engaging classrooms and meet our charming teachers. There will be fun activities and entertainment for the children and kid-friendly snacks and drinks. It’s a great time to make new friends, schedule summer play dates, and get questions answered. You can even pick up an enrollment packet and start filling it out.
I can’t say enough good things about this school. The teachers are the cream of the crop. My son is learning, he’s happy, he’s challenged, and he’s loved.
You are invited to our family fun Rockin Luau 🌴 Dance Party with live DJ on Friday, June 2 from 5:30-8pm. Get your tickets in the office now! Prices go up at the event.
