Dear Short Avenue Families~

NEWS!!
Spring Carnival Winning Date: We had 85 responses to our survey. The winning date is Saturday May 5th! Noon to 4Pm Please mark your calendars!!
The first image below shows that everyone who took the survey filled out the question in English. The second image shows that 33 people also filled out the question in Spanish.
Free Nutrition Classes: The 1st class last week was all about how and why to cut down on sugar and salt in our cooking, and how to read food labels and calculate grams of sugar into teaspoons, (divide by 4!) And that our daily intake of sugar should be no more than 6 tsp for women, 9 tsp for men and 4 tsp for children.
Children’s Hospital is sponsoring 7 classes aimed to teach us about healthy food choices, shopping on a budget and easy ways to incorporate more exercise in our busy lives. Classes will be on Tuesdays in January and February at 8:15 in the Room 1, the Parent Center. This week we will learn how to use a slow cooker to cook healthy meals!
Future classes include quick and easy meals and snacks, BMI, portion size and whole grains and physical activity.

Walk And Talk Success:The first Walk and Talk Tour last Thursday was a big success. Lots of nice families came to see our school and seemed very interested in all that we have to offer!
We need help spreading the word about our Walk and Talks. Please let your former preschools know, as well as any friends with TK and K aged children. The Walk and Talk Tours are once a month and on the calendar.
STEAM Street Art Gallery: Have you always wanted your child’s art to be on a banner on our school fence? Well, another STEAM Street Art Gallery Fundraiser is coming soon. These are the small banners on Beethoven. Keep an eye out for fliers in those backpacks.

Coffee With The Principal Update: Ms. Reynolds explained Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), which is a student-centered approach to teaching math. It starts with what your students already know and builds on their natural number sense and intuitive approaches to problem solving. CGI is a way of listening to students, asking smart questions and engaging with their thinking – all with the goal of uncovering and expanding every student’s mathematical understanding. CGI has been around for 20 years, and is being adapted in all the classrooms at Short Avenue and throughout LAUSD.

Ms. Reynolds also discussed the importance of good attendance. Any time your child is absent, no matter the reason, it costs our school $63.48 per student. If your child has a fever or is too sick to come to school, please keep them home. But do think twice about missing school for any reason other than illness or emergency.

!!!!BIG NEWS!!!!

$10,000 Library Makeover Awarded to Short Avenue School

Dear Short Avenue Families,

Do you remember seeing emails for the LAUSD Summer Reading Challenge? They were asking students to read and log their reading hours. Well it turns out that many of our students did participate in this challenge, and one of our students, Luna Vargas in TK, had her name picked out of a hat, awarding our Short AvenuAe School as the winner of a $10,000 Library Makeover!!!
Big Thanks goes to Alicia Casilli, our tireless library aid, for spearheading this contest and the love of reading to all of our students! We also thank the Vargas Family and all the families who participated in this contest. It is hard to imagine that anyone ever wins these things, but we did!!!
You may notice district employees painting and tidying up the school this week. This is in preparation for an assembly on Friday November 3rd at 8:00am, where we will be presented with “the big check” and will receive a visit from the international bestselling author Amy Ephron, who will sign copies of her new book The Castle in the Mist for the 5th and 6th grade classes, and the students who were part of the challenge. The book is available through Amazon for anyone else who would like to purchase a book. All Students will receive a bookmark!
The $10,000 will go directly to our library for new books and furniture. A survey will be conducted in the classrooms for students and teachers to suggest books for us to add to our collection.
Congratulations to Luna Vargas, Alicia Casilli, all the students who entered, and the students of Short Avenue School who will benefit from this exciting win!!!
