FAQ FOR DOLPHIN DISCOVERY CLUB WINTER 2025
NOTE: Unlike the Fall 2024 DDC season, FoSA is no longer using the Jumbula platform for registration. As such, please read these FAQs carefully to understand how the program will work, including registration, for the Winter 2025 DDC season.
1. What is the Dolphin Discovery Club?
The Dolphin Discovery Club (DDC) is a fee-based, after school enrichment program organized by Friends of Short Avenue (FoSA) for the benefit of the Short Avenue community.
The Winter 2025 DDC season is an 8-week session that will run from the week of January 27th through the week of March 17th. There will be another 8-week spring season that will begin at the end of March and run through May.
2. Does my child have to participate in the DDC?
No. DDC is a completely optional program.
3. My child is already enrolled in an after school program at Short Avenue (e.g., PrimeTime, All-Stars, etc.) should I enroll them in a DDC enrichment class as well?
If your child is already enrolled in an afterschool program at Short Avenue (e.g., PrimeTime, All-Stars, etc.), enrolling them in DDC is not required. However, DDC is an optional program that can be added to complement their current afterschool activities if you feel it aligns with their interests and schedule. The choice to enroll is entirely up to you and your child's needs.
If your child is in PrimeTime, you should NOT enroll your child in a PrimeTime enrichment class through DDC, but rather work directly with PrimeTime. PrimeTime has opened some of their enrichment classes to the Short Avenue community who are not currently enrolled in the PrimeTime aftercare program.
5. What classes will be offered for the Winter 2025 DDC Season?
Please review the chart below for classes, grade requirements, location, time, price and number of spaces for each class. For more specific class descriptions, please visit the vendor’s website. Flyers from each vendor will also be coming home the week of January 6th with more information about class offerings.
6. Who provides the DDC enrichment classes?
FoSA is working with vendors and Short Avenue teachers and staff to provide the DDC enrichment classes. All vendors are registered with LAUSD, which requires background checks and insurance as well as other requirements.
This winter FoSA is working with Got Game (GG), Chess Wizards and Prime Time. Prime Time is opening their aftercare enrichment classes to the community as long as they had space available (i.e., they were not fully enrolled by the families participating in the aftercare program).
Additionally, Ms. Levy and Ms. Jacqueline are also offering classes this winter. Musical Theater, which is run by Ms. Hohman and Ms. Marina, will also continue through the winter and spring seasons, but enrollment for this program is closed since it is a year-long program and enrollment happened in the fall.
7. Where do I register for the DDC?
For the Winter 2025 DDC Season, you will register directly with the vendor for your class for the enrichment classes offered by Got Game, Prime Time and Chess Wizards. For the Zine Club and Spanish classes, you will register through the FoSA store

8. Why did FoSA get rid of centralized registration on Jumbula for the Winter and Spring 2025 DDC Seasons?
FoSA transitioned away from centralized registration on Jumbula for the Winter and Spring 2025 DDC Seasons in response to valuable feedback from our community. Families expressed a preference for a more direct connection with program vendors for registration and communication. This change allows vendors to manage these processes directly, ensuring a smoother and more streamlined experience for everyone. FoSA will continue to support vendors as needed and has carefully coordinated all offerings to provide a robust lineup of programs for our school community.
9. When can I register for the DDC?
For the Winter 2025 DDC Season, registration begins on Sunday, January 12th at 9:00am. All vendors will open registration for their classes at this time.
10. Can I register for more than one class?
Yes, you can register for more than one class.
11. Do I have to pay for all the classes at the time of registration?
Yes. The vendors will require full payment at the time of registration. If you need financial assistance, please reach out to the vendor directly. Contact information is provided in an FAQ below.
12. How are classes filled?
Registration is on a first-come basis.
13. What if a class is full?
If a class is full, you can add your child’s name to the vendor’s waitlist. If a space becomes available, you will be notified by the vendor.
For the Zine Club and Spanish, you can send an email to ddc@friendsofshortavenue.org requesting that your child be added to the waitlist.
14. How does my child get to their DDC class?
Teachers will have a roster for all children participating in the DDC. Teachers will remind students of their DDC enrichment class and location. For children in grades 2 – 5, they will independently go to the location for their DDC class. For children in grades TK-1, the vendor will pick up the children from their homeroom and take them to their DDC class.
15. When do DDC classes occur?
DDC classes occur immediately after school. Got Game and Prime Time classes, as well as the Zine Club and Spanish classes, end at 4pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Tuesday, DDC classes mostly end at 3pm. However, Chess Wizards ends at 2:45pm on Tuesdays.
16. Where do I pick up my child after their DDC class?
It depends. For children taking a class in the auditorium, parents/caregivers should pick them up outside the front of the auditorium at the end of the class. For all other classes, parents/caregivers should pick them up at the Short Avenue Gate at the end of the DDC class.
17. Who do I contact if I need to pick up my child early from a DDC enrichment class?
Please contact the vendor or teacher that is providing the enrichment class. You will receive a communication from the vendor with contact information after registration.
18. If a class is canceled, how and when will I be notified?
A class may be canceled if an instructor is sick or if there is inclement weather. If this were to happen, you will be notified through an email by either the vendor or FoSA.
19. Will there be any makeup classes for a canceled session?
One make-up class may be scheduled per enrichment class the week of March 24th depending on instructor and space availability. If a make-up is scheduled, you will be notified by email.
If there are multiple sessions canceled, only one makeup class may be scheduled given the school calendar and the start of the Spring 2025 DDC Season at the end of March.
20. Can I receive a makeup class if my child is sick or absent?
No. There will be no individual makeup classes scheduled.
21. Why can’t there be more classes to accommodate more students?
There are space limitations on campus that impact the number of classes we can offer. Due to these constraints, we can only provide as many classes as there are spaces available for them to meet. After-school spaces are shared among several programs, including Prime Time, Beyond the Bell, All Stars, and DDC. This winter, we’ve worked to increase the number of classes by incorporating Prime Time’s aftercare enrichment offerings into the DDC schedule, provided space is still available after Prime Time families have enrolled.
FoSA and the administration remain committed to exploring ways to expand DDC offerings despite these physical constraints, and we sincerely thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to improve.
22. Who do I contact if I have another question about the Dolphin Discovery Club?

Once a vendor is registered with LAUSD, you can contact FoSA at DDC@friendsofshortavenue.com to discuss scheduling for an upcoming DDC season.
